How to read a satellite map

This is a satellite image taken by the GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) weather satellite located 22,300 miles above the Earth. It shows current cloud cover with the white and grey areas representing cloud cover. This map is especially useful in tracking tropical activity since there are no radar images associated with oceans.

Color Enhanced Satellite

Some of our satellite images are color enhanced. Located at the top of the map, a key shows how the color of cloud tops relates to how cold they are. Occasionally, the highest, coldest cloud tops produce the heaviest precipitation. The relative temperatures associated with the color key are as follows:

Color 1 (gray) -25°C to -27°C or -13°F to -16°F
Color 2 -28°C to -30°C or -17°F to -22°F
Color 3 -31°C to -35°C or -23°F to -31°F
Color 4 -36°C to -44°C or -32°F to -47°F
Color 5 -45°C to -50°C or -48°F to -58°F
Color 6 -51°C to -56°C or -59°F to -69°F
Color 7 (orange) -57°C to -64°C or -70°F to -83°F
Color 8 -65°C to -72°C or -84°F to -98°F
Color 9 -73°C to -86°C or -99°F to -108°F
Color 10 -79°C to -86°C or -109°F to -123°F
Color 11 (brown) -87°C to -90°C or -124°F to -130°F
